چکیده

There are a variety of properties which are believed to be associated with long distance reflexives. These include the requirement that the reflexive form be monomorphemic, subject orientation, and blocking by subjects intervening between the reflexive and its antecedent (in appropriate languages). Malay long distance reflexives have been claimed to contradict the expected typological correlations. We argue that Malay does not constitute a genuine counter example because, on closer examination, what appear to be long distance reflexives are in fact instances of a form which is indeterminate between a local reflexive and a pronoun.

The typology of Malay reflexives

Malay diri þ pronoun appears on initial examination to be a counter example to the typological claims made in the literature regarding the properties of long distance (LD) reflexives. It has been claimed that (1) LD reflexives are monomorphemic; (2) LD reflexives are subject oriented; (3) in languages without subject–verb agreement, LD reflexives manifest the Blocking Effect, the blocking of a ...

A (Covert) Long Distance Anaphor in English

The empirical focus of this paper is the distribution of strict and sloppy interpretations of reflexive pronouns in comparative stripping. We present a set of new data which indicates that strict readings of reflexives in comparative stripping, while possible, are blocked when the subject of the comparative clause is a name or pronoun. We then show that the pattern of strict readings in compara...

György Rákosi: Beyond identity: The case of a complex Hungarian reflexive

It is a well-known typological universal that long distance reflexives are generally monomorphemic and complex reflexives tend to be licensed only locally. I argue in this paper that the Hungarian body part reflexive maga ‘himself’ and its more complex counterpart önmaga ‘himself, his own self’ represent a non-isolated pattern that adds a new dimension to this typology. Nominal modification of ...

An Experimental Syntactic Study of Binding of Multiple Anaphors in Korean :

In this paper we investigated the binding behavior of three Korean reflexives—caki, casin, and caki-casin—through a Truth Value Judgment Task with pictures and found that while caki and caki-casin pattern as claimed in the theoretical literature, as a long-distance and a local anaphor respectively, native Korean speakers differ in how they treat casin. While the speakers as a group treat casin ...

Body-Part Nouns as a Source of Reflexives: Towards a Grammaticalization Account of . . .

It is well-known that nouns denoting the human body or parts of it are an important source of polysemy in the languages of the world. One such example, the development of Georgian tav’head’ into a reflexive anaphor, is the object of the present paper. After a typological overview of reflexivization strategies in Georgian, we present an account, both synchronic and diachronic, of the rise of var...
